The Post's approach to Chaplaincy is almost secular, certainly not evangelical but rather based on caring service. Chaplain Randy felt that way in his years here, and Chaplain Sam shares that value, one reason Post leadership selected him to succeed Randy. Chaplain Sam also serves as the Chaplain for the historic and oldest in the country Wilmington Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance. A self-described 'country Baptist' who kids that he has his own Rabbi (two actually), he also volunteers with the Little Sisters of the Poor, and among his mentees are at least two Muslims. "Faith should NOT be 'a mine is better than yours' competition," he's long said, speaking to the Post's values, for what he calls "a Big Tent approach to valuing all Faiths, or even those who don't hold one! " This role is about serving all our members first with a pastoral chaplaincy mindset of care, support and problem-solving.   Three... --- - Published: 2023-01-15 - Modified: 2023-01-15 - URL: https://delvets.com/e-board-business/ This content is password-protected. Bryan, Eugene A. Delle Donne, Robert K. Emmons, John E. Healy II, George F. Kelly Jr. , James C. Stewart, William W. Swayze, James F. Toner, Jr. , and Robert P. Vandergrift) were disenchanted with the operations of the local VFW’s and American Legions’ and decided to form their own Veterans Organization. The first meeting was held in the boardroom of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. at 9th & Market Sts. , in Wilmington, Delaware, because Bill Swayze was employed there and could get the meeting room free of charge. A State organization was formed, incorporated, and a State Charter obtained. Then the Delaware Veterans of WWII Inc. , Post #1 was established. Jim Stewart was the first State Commander and Jack Pearce was elected the first Post Commander. By this time they had already started bringing in new members as you can see by Jack Pearce’s name not being listed on the Charter. Several meetings were held at the Blue Rock Community Center on Baynard Blvd. , and then the meetings were moved to the Central YMCA At 11th & Washington Streets in early May or June 1946. Dover Post #2 was organized in the spring of 1947. There also have been several attempts to form a 3rd Post in Sussex County, Delaware, although none have ever proven successful. Our first clubhouse was started... --- - Published: 2022-03-25 - Modified: 2025-12-28 - URL: https://delvets.com/about-delvets/post-officers-committee-chairs/ 2026 OFFICERS OFFICENAMECommanderMark Schilling (N)(PC)Vice-CommanderJohn Pastor (A)SecretaryVince Knoll (A)TreasurerSean MacLaren (NG)Treasurer-Elect - Ex-OfficioKristy Chester (A)Sergeant-at-ArmsBill Allison (A) Executive Board Members POSITIONNameYearPRESIDENTEd Brinkman (A)2026MEMBERBob Onorato (CG)(PC)2026 - 27MEMBERBob Morris (A)2026-27MEMBERJim Hague (NG)2026MEMBERJohn Squire (A)2026 E BOARD BUSINESS Home, Inc. The Honor Guard was established to be the service arm of the larger body of members known as Delaware Vets Post #1. It was formed after some Post members attended the funeral of one of our veteran members. The funeral director asked if we would like to fold and present the flag to the deceased member's widow. Not feeling comfortable in folding the flag after watching the military do so on TV and at other funerals, but we would certainly be willing to handle the presentation to the widow. Our chaplain did an excellent job. It was decided on the way home from the veterans cemetery that we should be able to perform those tasks as well as others that may present itself. Founding members of the Honor Guard were Jack Thomas, Joe Kiefer and Joe Reardon. The organization was reorganized in 2004 with very little change in the organization, however new leadership was elected and the Honor Guard attended Post members funerals and participated in parades and other Post functions In June 2022 new officers were appointed and we look forward to be a very active part of Post #1. The primary goal of the WAC is to seek out and support 501(c)3 organizations within our community, as well as military and veteran groups that survive on donations. Many different events are held at Del Vets Post #1 to raise money to meet this goal. Included are an annual September spaghetti dinner and basket raffle, a potato bar dinner on Thanksgiving Eve, a Christmas auction, WAC-Y Bingo, and a St. Patrick’s Day dinner. In the past, other fundraisers have included a chili cook-off/dinner, a “Minute-to-Win-It” tournament, craft fair, and comedy night. Del Vets Post #1 supports the activities of the WAC and in turn, the WAC assists the Post in their endeavors. In addition to monetary donations, the Women’s Activity Club sponsors various collections that allow us to donate items such as food for local food banks, toiletry and clothing needs for the homeless, school supplies for Title 1 schools in the area, and local coat drives for children. The Women’s Activity Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the Del Vets hall at 7:15pm from September through May. Jim was drafted by the Houston Astro’s and former head baseball coach at the University of Delaware and Wilmington College. I said, yes I knew Sherm back in the early 1980’s when I was manager of Del Vet’s baseball team and he was coaching Stahl Post. We were great friendly enemies. John asked again if I knew him. I said yes. Then, I called Sherm and the two spoke for a while. It turns out that they grew up together in New Castle Delaware and played street hockey together. They haven’t seen each other since seventh grade. The rest is history! We invited him up to watch a Sunday Eagles game, they reminisced about the old days. Meanwhile, Chip McHugh, post member and former Concord High School Hall of Famer Pitcher and draftee of the Detroit Tigers came over to say hello. Turns out they also knew each back in the day. It was a great day of reminiscing for all of us! Coach Sherman told us you people up at Del Vets are amazing. --- - Published: 2023-11-08 - Modified: 2023-11-08 - URL: https://delvets.com/commander-kudos-toys-for-tots/ Thanks to our 5K Toys for Tots Committee for putting on a fantastic event. We had 200 participants, a beautiful day, plenty to eat and drink, some great prizes and best of all, we handed a $10,000 check to the Marines for their Toys for Tots campaign. We also collected six boxes of toys and it was all covered by Channel 6 Action News. Kudos to co-chairs Tom and Barb Cassidy and committee members Florie Henry, Harvey Freville and Bruce Broaddus for making our 25th 5K a day to remember. After 14 years Tom and Barb are riding off into the sunset and they went out with a bang. You know it was a good event when 5K founder Sam Minutola was walking around with a big smile on his face all day. While Tom and Barb are off enjoying their retirement, we still have to worry about the next 5K. Anyone interested in joining or heading up the committee next year please see the Commander. It will be tough to top this year’s event but that should be the goal every year. --- - Published: 2023-10-20 - Modified: 2023-11-19 - URL: https://delvets.com/history-of-the-delvets-toys-for-tots/ History of the Del Vets Toys for Tots  5K Run/ Walk Race by Sam Minutola The race was born November 10th 1997 up at Cookies Tavern Marine Bar up in South Philly, Pa.
