DelVets Post #1 Chaplain Sam Waltz ~ 302 777 7774 ~ SamWaltz@SamWaltz.com ~ invites and encourages Post members and their families needing some Pastoral-type care or counsel to reach out to him.
The Post’s approach to Chaplaincy is almost secular, certainly not evangelical but rather based on caring service.
Chaplain Randy felt that way in his years here, and Chaplain Sam shares that value, one reason Post leadership selected him to succeed Randy. Chaplain Sam also serves as the Chaplain for the historic and oldest in the country Wilmington Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance.
A self-described ‘country Baptist’ who kids that he has his own Rabbi (two actually), he also volunteers with the Little Sisters of the Poor, and among his mentees are at least two Muslims. “Faith should NOT be ‘a mine is better than yours’ competition,” he’s long said, speaking to the Post’s values, for what he calls “a Big Tent approach to valuing all Faiths, or even those who don’t hold one!”
This role is about serving all our members first with a pastoral chaplaincy mindset of care, support and problem-solving.
Three years ago this month, he officiated a wedding for a young couple who wanted a faith-based wedding, but were not active in a church, and had no pastor to ask. He’s also participated in a number of funeral remembrances in Delaware, one of them in the last year for a Kent County Army veteran who had been a Delaware Supreme Court justice and a 40-year friend.
Living about 10 miles away on the other side of town from Post #1, he’s not often in the Post on social occasions to “meet and greet,” plus he still works full-time as a consultant. As a result, he encourages members to reach out via a text, an email or a call about anything that comes up.
Please get in touch with me if anyone is sick or has passed so I can get them a card out at the very least! Please fill out the form and I will be in touch soon. Thank you all for understanding. Chaplain Sam Waltz.
