DEL VETS HONOR GUARD
Delaware Veterans Post No. 1 Honor Guard established 1998 to honor our veteran Post members who pass away.
The Honor Guard was established to be the service arm of the larger body of members known as Delaware Vets Post #1. It was formed after some Post members attended the funeral of one of our veteran members.
The funeral director asked if we would like to fold and present the flag to the deceased member’s widow. Not feeling comfortable in folding the flag after watching the military do so on TV and at other funerals, but we would certainly be willing to handle the presentation to the widow. Our chaplain did an excellent job.
It was decided on the way home from the veterans cemetery that we should be able to perform those tasks as well as others that may present itself. Founding members of the Honor Guard were Jack Thomas, Joe Kiefer and Joe Reardon.
The organization was reorganized in 2004 with very little change in the organization, however new leadership was elected and the Honor Guard attended Post members funerals and participated in parades and other Post functions
In June 2022 new officers were appointed and we look forward to be a very active part of Post #1.
HONOR GUARD MISSION STATEMENT
To bring comfort to the families of members who have passed away by the use of Military Type Actions to honor our departed friend by giving a final Salute and perhaps folding and presenting the flag that draped the coffin, to the family.
Offer to have a squad fire the volleys when we are able to acquire enough weapons to equip them.
Assist the Post in the annual ceremony honoring our deceased members by participating in the planning and execution including the firing of the volley.
Participate in fund raising activities for the Post, sponsoring some and helping with others. The “HELP” are things like manning the P/A System and handling traffic and parking control.
